The Peoples Republic of China bounds from strength to strength. Every year sees increases in its wealth and power relative to the world. But what do its leaders hope to achieve with their newfound clout? Jonathan D. T. Wards book Chinas Vision of Victory traces the Chinese desire to shape the future of all mankind (not just the East Asian part of it) to a national myth taught to schoolchildren across China. According to this narrative, China was once the center of the world; China was the mother of invention, the seat of global wealth, and the beacon of civilization. This is Chinas natural role in the world ordera role disrupted by the century of humiliation between the Opium Wars and World War II when China suffered at the hands of foreign powers. But now that age of suffering is over. Chinas destiny, according to its leaders, is to reclaim its natural perch as the leading force of human civilization. Tanner Greer writes that these global ambitions raise serious questions for the United States' questions, which go beyond whether Americans will be willing to live in a world where China is the supreme economic and military power. The hardest question may be whether we are willing to live in a world where dominant economic and military power is wielded by an insecure regime whose leaders believe that the same authoritarian techniques used to control enemies within their society must be used to surveil, coerce, and corrupt those enemies outside it.
I have seen the future, and it works, the left-wing journalist Lincoln Steffens famously declared, after observing Bolshevik Russia in its infancy. What was intended as a utopian boast soon read as a dystopian prediction , but then eventually, as Stalinist ambition gave way to Brezhnevian decay, it curdled into a sour sort of joke? Today, though, there is a palpable fear in the liberal West that Beijing is succeeding where Moscow failed, and that the peculiar blend of Maoist dogmatics, nationalist fervor, one-party meritocracy and surveillance-state capitalism practiced in the Peoples Republic of China really is a working alternative to liberal democracy with cruelty sustained by efficiency and a resilience that might outstrip our own.

Crop growth and viability of seeds on Mars and Moon soil simulants
If humans are going to establish a base on the Moon or Mars, they will have to grow their crops. An option is to use Lunar and Martian regolith. These regoliths are not available for plant growth experiments. Therefore NASA has developed regolith simulants. The major goal of this project was to cultivate and harvest crops on these Mars and Moon simulants. The simulants were mixed with organic matter to mimic the addition of residues from earlier harvests. Ten different crops, garden cress, rocket, tomato, radish, rye, quinoa, spinach, chives, pea, and leek were sown in random lines in trays. Nine of the ten species grew well, with the exception of spinach. It was possible to harvest edible parts for nine out of ten crops. The total biomass production per tray was highest for the Earth control and Mars soil simulant and differed significantly from Moon soil simulant. The seeds produced by three species were tested for germination (radish, rye, and cress). The germination on Moon soil simulant was significantly lower in radish than for the Earth control soil.

Strong storms generating earthquake-like seismic activity
A Florida State University researcher has uncovered a new geophysical phenomenon where a hurricane or other strong storm can spark seismic events in the nearby ocean as strong as a 3.5 magnitude earthquake.
"We're calling them 'stormquakes,'" said lead author Wenyuan Fan, an assistant professor of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science. "This involves the coupling of the atmosphere-ocean and solid earth. During a storm season, hurricanes or nor'easters transfer energy into the ocean as strong ocean waves, and the waves interact with the solid earth producing intense seismic source activity." The research is published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

Preserving old bones with modern technology
A team of University of Colorado Boulder anthropologists is out to change the way that scientists study old bones damage-free.
If that sounds like a macabre goal, consider this: Bits of well-preserved bones are valuable to researchers studying humans who lived thousands to hundreds of thousands of years ago.
These samples sometimes contain collagen, a useful molecule than can reveal a wealth of information about human remains -- from how long ago a person died to what he or she may have eaten.
"Bone collagen is a treasure within the realm of archaeology," said Christina Ryder, a graduate student in the Department of Anthropology at CU Boulder.
Now, she and her colleagues have come up with a creative way to be thrifty with that treasure.
In research published this week in the journal Scientific Reports, the group describes a new method for screening bone samples to see if they contain collagen. Unlike existing tools that look for that type of tissue, the team's approach won't damage the bones in the process.

he Biblical Edom Unearthed: Not a Myth, a Historical Reality
In Psalm 60, the Psalmist describes the totality of God’s victory over Israel’s foes, proclaiming, “Moab is my wash-basin; upon Edom, I cast my sandal.”
This is only one of more than 100 mentions of Edom in the Old Testament. The Edomites were descendants from Esau, Jacob’s older brother. The Genesis account of the troubled twins describes Esau as red all over when he was born. Esau, you might remember, sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of red stew. Edom means “red” in Hebrew; thus, Esau’s descendants came to be known as Edomites.
Over the years, many scholars doubted the Edomites even existed, at least as described in those biblical accounts. Specifically, they regarded the depiction in the Pentateuch of the Edomite to be largely mythical. The real Edomite kingdom, they believed, emerged three or more centuries later, during the latter part of Israel’s divided monarchy, and was “read back” into the story of the Exodus.
Well, these scholars were mistaken. Recently, a team excavating in Israel’s Timna Valley found evidence of a “thriving and wealthy society” dating back to the 12th century before Christ. What kind of evidence? An extensive network of ancient copper-smelting facilities was found in the parts of Israel and Jordan that the Bible associates with Edom.

The following article is a bit disconcerting. They are modeling proteins by making a musical map of your proteins. Other bodily functions have been mapped using this technique. Satanic worship is here and will increase. Do we want our very bodily structure to harmonize with the sounds of Satan?
Proteins, we hear you loud and clear. A group of researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) devised an artificial-intelligence (AI)-based approach to translate each of the 20 amino acids into audible sound—even building a downloadable phone app to play each one—all with the idea that music could be a medium to better understand protein structure and possibly lead to the invention of new protein designs.
“We’re interested in building models of materials based on proteins,” says senior author Markus Buehler, Ph.D., the McAfee Professor of Engineering and head of the department of civil and environmental engineering at MIT, during an interview with GEN. “And we’re always trying to find new ways.”
Typically, he explains, the models are based on molecules and atoms and chemistry—that is, more conventional methods—but then he and his colleagues got to thinking about different ways of representing matter. Given that at the nanoscale, things always move and vibrate, they thought, “Maybe there’s a way of describing matter, uniquely, by looking at their vibrational spectra,” he says. So they combined that concept with the general understanding that proteins, like music, have a hierarchical structure. “We thought there might be some synergies of putting these things together,” he says.
With a plan formed, the MIT researchers took the natural vibrational frequencies of the amino acids, which are inaudible to the human ear, and adhering to the musical concept of transpositional equivalence, they used a computer algorithm to transpose each one into a unique audible sound that fell on the frequency spectrum of 20 to 20,000 Hz—that is, frequencies that the human ear can detect.
The result was a 20-tone amino acid scale, and the sound created for each amino acid was not that of a single frequency but a cluster of frequencies, much like a musical chord, which is the playing of several musical notes simultaneously. The frequency spectrum of the amino acids was then mapped onto a piano keyboard, creating a musical score that could be played. And given that proteins are not one-dimensional, the researchers also incorporated the volume and length of the tone to reflect secondary structures and give the musical composition some rhythm.
Putting the art in artificial intelligence
Because the human brain has limited ability to decipher the subtle sound differences among the modified amino acids, the MIT researchers turned to AI as a way of learning how the different structures and functions of proteins are encoded in the sound. Put another way; they let AI be their translator.
“The AI allowed us—and this was the major enabler of this work—to do this translation fully automatically using a computational model,” says Buehler. He explains that when they tried to study relationships between music and proteins in past work, they had used mathematical tools, but the process was largely done with pen and paper and was “very tedious” and “very difficult.”

We herein provide a review of the pharmacological properties available on most of these substances, trying to provide better knowledge on these compounds, particularly concerning toxicity and dangerous adverse effects in users. Indeed, this NSOs share not only a great potency of action and receptor affinity concerning natural or synthetic opiates (e.g., morphine, heroin, and methadone) but also non-negligible toxicity leading to intoxications and fatalities, posing serious harm to public health and society.
