The Farmers’ Almanac Forecasts a “Grand Solar Minimum” Winter for 2020-21
Unlike the Old Farmers’ Almanac — which makes weather predictions through a combination of animal signals, chicken bones, pig spleens, and other weather lore — the Farmers’ Almanac bases its outlook on a “mathematical and astronomical formula” dating back to 1818 that takes sunspot activity and other astronomical anomalies into account, and is therefore, in my opinion, far more reliable.
This annual periodical is predicting a “Grand Solar Minimum”-style winter for the United States and Canada this season. Officially dubbed “Winter of the Great Divide”, the Farmers’ Almanac is anticipating a brutally cold winter for northern, central, and eastern regions, drought in the west, and everything crazy in between. Federal agencies issue joint advisory for legal use of drones
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Department of Justice (DOJ), Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have issued a joint advisory guidance document for non-federal public and private entities to better understand the regulations that may apply to systems and capabilities for detecting and mitigating threats posed by Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly known as drones.

FEMA Establishes Voluntary Agreement with Private Sector for COVID-19 Response
FEMA established a five-year voluntary agreement that enhances coordination and cooperation with private sector manufacturers, distributors and industry representatives. The voluntary agreement, made under Defense Production Act authorities, helps to provide critical health and medical resources to respond to COVID-19 and future pandemics.
Federal departments and agencies can engage with private sector partners to develop sector-specific plans of action for improved information sharing and coordination within supply chain networks. It will better allow the federal government to plan for response activities with private sector partners and acquire and use real-time data to make important decisions. Participants of the agreement are granted relief from antitrust laws for specific actions taken under the agreement.
In May, FEMA held a public meeting with private sector representatives to seek feedback on the agreement. A transcript of the meeting can be found here. German Docs Identify Poison Used in Attempt on Russian Opposition Leader
Initial findings by physicians and scientists at the Berlin Charité hospital, where Russia's opposition leader Alexey Nvalny was transferred late Sunday, indicate that he was poisoned. The hospital spokesperson told reporters on Monday (24 August) that the first clinical investigations indicated that the substance Russian agents used in their attempt to kill Navalny belong to a group of active substances called cholinesterase inhibitors. In minute quantities, cholinesterase inhibitors, also known as anti-cholinesterase, are used as drugs for Alzheimer's and myasthenia gravis, but can be lethal in larger quantities and can be used as insecticides and chemical weapons. Solar system may have had a second sun that helped grab Planet Nine
BILLIONS of years ago, there may have been two suns in our solar system. If so, that could explain how the solar system caught its outermost objects, including the hypothetical Planet Nine.
Our solar system is far bigger than just the space occupied by the eight official planets: it extends out to the Oort cloud, a belt of icy objects that sits about 2000 to 100,000 times as far from the sun as Earth does, and is only loosely gravitationally bound to the sun. Link

SPIRAL LIGHTS ON MARS: NASA's MAVEN spacecraft has discovered something unexpected on Mars--and researchers are struggling to explain it.
"There is a vast spiral of ultraviolet light over Mars' South Pole," says Nick Schneider of the University of Colorado's Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. "We understand the origin of the light, but its shape is a mystery."

The light is "nightglow." We have it here on Earth, too, where it's called "airglow." During the day, ultraviolet radiation from the sun breaks apart compounds in the upper atmosphere. At night, the atoms reassemble, glowing as they put themselves back together again. On Earth, airglow looks like the aurora borealis; people can actually see it. On Mars, the emission is ultraviolet, invisible to the human eye. Link

Ancient mountains recorded in Antarctic sandstones
reveal potential links to global events
"Mountain building occurs in association with the plate tectonic motions of the continents," said Paulsen, the lead author on the paper. "Geologists have long recognized that the generation of significant mountainous relief has the potential to profoundly influence the chemistry of the Earth's oceans and atmosphere."
Yet there are significant questions about the patterns of mountain building in Earth's past, especially associated with the ancient rock record leading up to the explosion of life about 541 million years ago. Link
Practical Tips
Get your voice heard. Typically, when you send a written communication to your public servants they "round file" it, which means it goes into the garbage. But there is a way to get your voice heard! You must use a Memorandum document. It can either be Opposition or Support. This document is official. It must become part of the governmental record. If it is lost they must find it, or you can hold their feet to the fire. I once had a hearing delayed because 300 memorandums went "missing". So important it was, the committee send their most senior aide to track them down. They did locate these documents and bring them to the committee where they were entered into the Public Record.

If you are canning your produce this season, mistakes can happen. For instance, in the throws of multitasking I forgot to put the dill in my Kosher dill pickles. That is fine. They still have pickling spice, bay leaves, garlic, and a red pepper so they will be delicious, minus the dill. With pickles, I could open the jars and put the dill in but recooking pickles would make them soggy.
Other mistakes such as a lid that does not properly seal can mean deadly bacteria can enter in. If you have jar(s) that do not seal, you must open them. Clean the rim thoroughly, and recan them either in a hot water bath or pressure cooker.
Canning Tip: You do lose precious vitamins in the canning process but your minerals stay intact. This means you should have either fresh or supplements to make up the vitamin deficiency.

It has been said that the human race knows more about certain distant galaxies than it does about the ground that lies beneath its very feet. In fact, while it took the famous Voyager 1 satellite 26 years to exit our Solar System (relaying measurements to Earth from 16.5 billion km away), it took about the same amount of time for humanity to penetrate a mere 12 km into the Earth’s surface.
While the U.S. and U.S.S.R. vied for space exploration supremacy during the Space Race, a different, less-publicized race took place between the two nation’s greatest drillers. In the late 1950s and early 1960s Americans and Soviets began planning separate efforts to drill as deep as possible into the Earth’s crust, the rocky shell that comprises the outer 30-50 km of the 6730 km distance to our planet’s core. A Submerged 7,000-Year-Old Discovery Shows the Great Potential of Underwater Archaeology
Stone tools scattered on the seafloor mark the oldest underwater site ever found on the continent.
Australia has a deep human history stretching back 65,000 years, but many of its oldest archaeological sites are now underwater. In an encouraging sign that Aboriginal artifacts and landscapes may actually be preserved offshore, archaeologists have discovered a 7,000-year-old site submerged along Australia's continental shelf, the first of its kind. Their discovery is outlined today in the journal PLoS One.

Left-Handed People in the Bible
Is there a genetic link to Benjamite lefties?
There are only three mentions of left-handed people in the Bible—and all of them refer to members of the tribe of Benjamin, including their deadly accurate slingers (see drawing above). Were these people from the tribe of Benjamin left-handed by nature or nurture? Modern studies in the genetics of left-handedness may be able to shed light on this curious case.
The Hebrew Bible mentions left-handed people on three occasions: the story of Ehud’s assassination of the Moabite king (Judges 3:12–30), the 700 Benjamites who could use the sling with deadly accuracy (Judges 20:16) and the two-dozen ambidextrous warriors who came to support David in Hebron (1 Chronicles 12:2). All of these stories of left-handed people in the Bible appear in military contexts, and, curiously, all involve members of the tribe of Benjamin. Link

The US Department of Health and Human Services announced last week the cancellation of Food and Drug Administration requirements on premarket reviews for lab-developed tests linked to COVID-19. Pitching the change as one targeting unnecessary policies and increasing flexibility in the face of the pandemic, the department stripped the FDA of a common safeguard on new items.
