Grand Solar Minimum Incoming
Solar Cycle 25 may be spluttering into life, but all is once-again quiet on the earth-facing solar disc: there are no sunspots — in fact, there haven’t been any for the past 6 days (as of Aug 27, 2020).
Solar activity is the driving force of Earth’s climate. This definition of obvious is only disputed by the misinformed, and by those with a financial or political motive.
High solar activity — as we’ve enjoyed for the past 100-or-so years — has delivered our planet a stable, predictable climate under-which we modern humans have had the opportunity to thrive and successfully advance our technological society.
However, and as with all good things, these predictable days are ending: the Sun’s output is waning to levels not seen for the past 200 years, to a reduction in activity not experienced since the Dalton Minimum (1790-1830). Link
A draft CISA directive asks civilian agencies not to punish outsiders who probe their systems.
With a solicitation closing Sept. 2 on a vulnerability disclosure platform and a finalized binding operational directive apparently in hand, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is getting ready to open the civilian government’s front door to individuals who might identify weaknesses in its defenses. Why Five New National Quantum Information Science Centers Are a Huge Deal
Why is this announcement different? These five centers bring together U.S. national labs, academia and industry, in a bid to accelerate progress in fundamental quantum information science research.
Progress in quantum research should lead to much more advanced technologies like cutting-edge quantum sensors, technologies needed for the development of the nation’s quantum internet, and the holy grail of quantum information science, a fully functional quantum computer. Or, in science terms, a fault-tolerant quantum computer that can compute without errors. The U.S. military has a "heat ray" weapon that was offered to repel migrants along the U.S.-Mexico border. It uses microwaves to make skin feel like it's burning. The New York Times has more on how this weapon was pitched for use ahead of the 2018 midterms, when "caravans of migrants" were all the right-wing rage in America, here.
GitHub is becoming a destination site for make-your-own-deepfake software.
Deepfakes —computer-generated images and footage of real people — have emerged as a major worry among the national security set. A new paper from researchers at FireEye finds that tools published to open source repositories such as GitHub are reducing the amount of technical expertise required to produce ever-more-convincing deepfakes. Moreover, they are increasingly easy to purchase from disreputable marketing and PR firms. Link
In the dawn of Coronavirus the designers and planners allotted nine out of ten dollars to fight the Infodemic. They only funded 1% of funds to fight this invisible invader.
Immunizing the public against misinformation
Soon after the world started getting used to the terms coronavirus and COVID-19, WHO coined another word: "infodemic" — an overabundance of information and the rapid spread of misleading or fabricated news, images, and videos. Like the virus, it is highly contagious and grows exponentially. It also complicates COVID-19 pandemic response efforts.
“We’re not just battling the virus,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “We’re also battling the trolls and conspiracy theorists that push misinformation and undermine the outbreak response.” Proliferating misinformation — even when the content is, in a best-case scenario, harmless — can have serious and even social and lethal health ramifications in the context of a global pandemic. In some countries, rumours about impending food scarcity prompted people to stockpile supplies early on in the epidemic and caused actual shortages. Link
US CDC: DON’T ARGUE WITH ANTI-MASKERS Following increasing reports of violent confrontations with individuals opposed to COVID-19 social distancing policies, including mandatory mask use at some businesses, the US CDC published guidance for retail workers to manage these risks. One of their principal recommendations is not to argue with non-compliant customers if they become aggravated. Reports of threats, assault, and other violent behavior by individuals opposed to COVID-19-related policies have become more commonplace as US businesses continue to reopen and retail employees are put in the position of enforcing new store policies.
The CDC guidance remains consistent in its recommendations for mask use, social distancing, and other measures while also taking into account the heightened risk of violence for those enforcing these policies. In addition to avoiding confrontations with aggravated individuals, the guidance also recommends that employers implement threat recognition and conflict resolution training, pair workers in teams to provide support in numbers, and provide employees with a safe area to go to if threatened. The guidance seems to take a common sense stance on worker safety: it is not worth the risk of violence for employees to force individuals to comply with store policies. Regardless, it remains concerning that some individuals not only refuse to comply with recommended (or required) protective actions but will raise their opposition to the level of directly endangering the health and safety of others through physical violence.

The Electrifying Science of Jellyfish Sprites, Explained
Here’s why it sometimes looks like red tentacles are dangling in the sky.
In the early morning hours of July 2, 2020, something beautiful and strange was brewing in the sky over western Texas. A forceful storm had built, and a little after 1:30 a.m., a Nikon Z6 camera at the McDonald Observatory, in the Davis Mountains, spotted a reddish-pink formation on the horizon, some 100 miles to the southeast. It was searingly bright and seemed to have dangly bits, like gossamer tentacles on a sea creature decked out for a rave. Link
A Massive Earthquake Is Coming to Cascadia—And It Can’t Be Stopped
Cascadia: The Big One from GenSix Productions on Vimeo.
But it can be anticipated and mitigated. Meet four guardians of the Pacific Northwest.
If you look at a world map, Cascadia is shaped like a whale swimming south. British Columbia’s temperate rainforest forms the bulk of its body, along with Washington state, Idaho, and much of Oregon. Mountainous Vancouver Island is the pectoral fin. The tail extends north to the southern tip of Alaska, and the whale’s open mouth, facing south, just catches northern California.
Tall, dense forests of pine, spruce, and cedar blanket the bioregion. Aquatic species, from barnacles to sea otters, thrive in the pockets of habitat created by the coastline’s sinuous edges. Cultural touchstones—from Nirvana and Bob Barker to Father’s Day and the computer mouse—have their roots here. Link

Start at 14.00. Dr. "Evil" Giodorano returns talking to us about about the dual use of Big Data. He describes the ways in which data can be used to develop precision pathogens, precision elements, and precision weapons against you. These are highly specific, overwhelming, and provocative because of what big data allows powers to do through the facet of the brain sciences and as part of the lens of the biological life natural and even physical sciences.
Facebook Wants to Make Smart Robots to Explore Every Nook and Cranny of Your Home
“Hey Alexa, play soothing music at volume three.”
“Hey Alexa, tell me where to find my keys.”
You can ask an Alexa or Google home assistant questions about facts, news, or the weather, and make commands for whatever you’ve synced them to (lights, alarms, TVs, etc.). But helping you find things is a capability that hasn’t quite come to pass yet; smart home assistants are essentially very rudimentary, auditory-only “brains” with limited functions.
But what if home assistants had a “body” too? How much more would they be able to do for us? (And what if the answer is “more than we want”?)
Pandemics in Perspective
Many adjectives can describe our current historical reality, which materialized when it became clear that the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) would reach pandemic proportions: Surreal, scary, revelatory, and humbling are all real and appropriate descriptions. Another term that appears frequently in news reports is “unprecedented.” It is certainly understandable that the current crises may feel unprecedented. After all, it has been more than three generations since the last pandemic of comparable magnitude. However, history assures us that our current global condition is most definitely not unprecedented. Humanity has confronted pandemic events many times before. An examination of our current state through a historical lens can perhaps offer us another adjective: hopeful.
Plague of Athens
Our earliest eyewitness account of a devastating disease event in classical antiquity comes to us from the Greek historian Thucydides, who describes in horrific detail his own experience during the “Plague of Athens,” an outbreak that occurred during a series of wars with Sparta at the end of the fifth century B.C.E. Holed up in their walled city in an attempt to ward off a besieging Spartan army, the Athenians found themselves fighting a war against their human enemies without, while simultaneously confronting an unknown disease within. Some estimates suggest that the Athenian epidemic killed up to 25 percent of the total population. Link
For the first time in history, global tyrants want to erase your face by covering up humanity with a mask. On the box the directions say they are not effective to prevent you from anything. Masks are also associated in the Bible with spiritual adultery, wickedness, and lawlessness-every time.
What Ancient Sculptures Reveal About Universal Facial Expressions
New research suggests displays of emotion may transcend time and culture
Researchers have long debated whether humans use universal facial expressions to show emotion. Now, a study of ancient Mesoamerican sculptures offers a new take on the age-old question, suggesting that expressions of emotions such as pain, happiness and sadness transcend both time and culture. (It’s worth noting, however, that several experts not involved in the research have raised questions regarding the findings, per Bruce Bower of Science News.) Link
Pella: A Window on Survival
Before writing my doctoral thesis two decades ago, the only Pella that I knew about was a small town in south central Iowa famous for its windows and doors. But in the course of my research, I discovered fascinating data about another Pella located in the Perean foothills of the Jordan River. In March I finally had the opportunity to visit the Pella located in northwestern Jordan.
Jesus, while looking over the temple mount in Jerusalem shortly before his death, prophesied that its beautiful stones would be thrown down within a generation. He warned that the residents should flee Jerusalem to the mountains when they saw the Roman armies surrounding the city. Jesus’ admonition is found in each of the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew 24:15–22; Mark 13:14–20; Luke 21:20–24). Perhaps Jesus visited Pella during his visit to the Decapolis (Mark 7:31) and Perea (Matthew 19:1; Mark 10:1), and recalling its secure location, cryptically referred to it in this prophecy. Eusebius’s Church History (3.5.3) recounts that the Jewish followers of Jesus heeded his warning and fled to Pella for safety before Jerusalem’s destruction. Birgil Pixner believes that, after the city’s destruction, they returned to Jerusalem to rebuild their Jewish-Christian synagogue on Mount Zion. Biblical Archeological Magazine

Synthetic Coating Developed That Could Deliver Drugs to the GI Tract
A newly developed synthetic coating, developed by MIT engineers, could deliver drugs in a sustained way to the small intestine. The lining consists of a polymer which can be consumed as a liquid. Once the solution reaches the small intestine, the molecules are assembled into a polymer, in a reaction catalyzed by an enzyme found in the small intestine. Link
Most of us are familiar with the names and faces in the New Testament but when it comes to all those names in the Old Testament our eyes glaze over with the "deer in the headlights" glaze. Who is righteous and who is evil? Can we know by the construct of the biblical text? Yes!!!!
