A University of Arizona-led team has nailed down the temperature of the last ice age – the Last Glacial Maximum of 20,000 years ago – to about 46 degrees Fahrenheit.
Their findings allow climate scientists to better understand the relationship between today’s rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide – a major greenhouse gas – and average global temperature. The Last Glacial Maximum, or LGM, was a frigid period when huge glaciers covered about half of North America, Europe and South America and many parts of Asia, while flora and fauna that were adapted to the cold thrived. Fiscal austerity and the rise of the Nazis
Many Western countries pursued deep austerity measures in response to debts from the financial crisis of 2007-2008, and may again do so in the wake of COVID-19 stimulus packages. This column reviews how in the early 1930s, austerity measures worsened social suffering and contributed to political unrest paving the way for the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany. The authors argue that the absence of a coherent response to social suffering from the Weimar government worsened the slump, contributing to the radicalization and polarization of the German electorate.
Many pages have been written about what drove Hitler to power. While economic factors (from the Great Depression to high unemployment rates) and socio-cultural conditions (arising from the oppressive measures in the Treaty of Versailles) played an indisputably important role, the rapid rise of the Nazi Party is still, nearly a century later, a topic of considerable debate (Adena et al. 2015, Doerr et al. 2018, Eichengreen 2018, Ferguson and Voth 2008, Satyanath et al. 2017, Voigtländer and Voth 2012, Voth 2020). Can we prevent a surge in pandemic-related homelessness?
- The COVID-19 crisis has exposed people around the world to eviction.
- Many places have implemented emergency protections for renters.
- But some protections haven’t been comprehensive, and others are expiring.
A number of efforts have been made to track evictions during the crisis. The Anti-Eviction Mapping Project, for example, has gathered and visualized data on global efforts to protect and fight for tenant rights. According to the Eviction Lab at Princeton University, more than 36,000 eviction cases were filed by landlords in the 17 US cities it tracks from the beginning of the pandemic through 15 August.

Germany is set to trial a Universal Basic Income scheme
- Starting this week, 120 Germans will receive a form of universal basic income every month for three years.
- The volunteers will get monthly payments of €1,200, or about $1,400, as part of a study testing a universal basic income.
- The study will compare the experiences of the 120 volunteers with 1,380 people who do not receive the payments.
- Supporters say it would reduce inequality and improve well-being, while opponents argue it would be too expensive and discourage work.
Germany is about to become the latest country to trial a universal basic income, starting a three-year study of how it affects the economy and recipients' well-being.
As part of the study, 120 people will receive €1,200, or about $1,430, each month for three years — an amount just above Germany's poverty line — and researchers will compare their experiences with another group of 1,380 people who will not receive the payments. Link

Towards Responsible #AIforAll in India
- The approach defines broad principles that AI solutions should adhere to, while also exploring implementation and enforcement mechanisms.
- A draft document has been released for public consultation. NITI Aayog is currently exploring a roadmap for enforcement of principles across the public sector, private sector and academic research.
Building further on the National Strategy on AI (NSAI) released in 2018, NITI Aayog is now working on outlining an approach towards realising the economic benefits of AI in a manner that is “responsible” to its users and broader society. The approach attempts to establish broad principles for design, development and deployment of AI in India – drawing on similar global initiatives but grounded in the Indian legal and regulatory context. The paper also explores means of operationalization of principles across the public sector, private sector, research and academia.
NITI Aayog, the think tank of the Government of India, is developing the approach to “Responsible #AIforAll” based on a large-scale stakeholder consultation facilitated by The Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) India. A Responsible AI working document (developed on the basis of a consultation workshop held in December 2019, organised by the C4IR India, World Economic Forum) was presented during a global consultation with AI ethics experts around the world on 21 July 2020 and subsequently released by NITI Aayog for wider public consultations. This is how the US - and the world - can win from reforestation
- Trees are key to tackling the climate crisis and supporting animals and plants. They’re also vital to jobs, business and our health.
- Momentum has been building globally and in the US, with numerous tree planting initiatives and partnerships to reforest burned areas, such as the Camp Fire.
- This week sees the launch of the U.S. Chapter of 1t.org, led by American Forests and the Forum. 855 million trees to be planted or conserved, and billions of dollars in supporting actions, such as mapping technology and carbon finance, which will lead to many more trees.
We need more trees. They are key to tackling the climate crisis and supporting countless unique types of animals and plants. They’re also vital to jobs, business and our health. Link

The Mesmerizing Geometry of Malaysia’s Most Complex Cakes
Bold colors and designs set kek lapis Sarawak apart.
On a 2019 episode of The Great British Baking Show, judge Paul Hollywood looks like he’s choosing his words very carefully when he speaks. “I think this is one of the hardest cake designs to make,” he says, referring to the gauntlet the judges have just thrown down for the contestants: to bake kek lapis Sarawak. “There’s nowhere to hide. We will see the problems.” Link

Meteorite Strikes May Create Unexpected Form of Silica
When a meteorite hurtles through the atmosphere and crashes to Earth, how does its violent impact alter the minerals found at the landing site? What can the short-lived chemical phases created by these extreme impacts teach scientists about the minerals existing at the high-temperature and pressure conditions found deep inside the planet?
New work led by Carnegie’s Sally June Tracy examined the crystal structure of the silica mineral quartz under shock compression and is challenging longstanding assumptions about how this ubiquitous material behaves under such intense conditions. The results are published in Science Advances. Link
Technology
The service has hired a Google partner to apply technology that has already changed cancer treatment and road repair.
The U.S. Navy has a $20-billion rust problem. Corrosion can hinder or even disable ships and aircraft at sea. But monitoring rust is expensive — $3 billion a year — and time-intensive for a Navy that’s already undermanned. So service leaders are turning to artificial intelligence software and drone photos to automate tasks and bring down the costs, Google announced today. Link

Defunding the Police Might Leave Americans More Surveilled and Less Secure
Technology in policing might appear more benign than rogue cops or racist judges, but a look at global trends gives pause.
Over the summer, while announcing the disbanding of a controversial plainclothes unit of the New York City Police Department after weeks of Black Lives Matter protests, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea referred to the need for “21st-century policing” that would use a range of technological tools—ShotSpotter (a sensor system that estimates the location of gunfire), video, DNA, and more—instead of “brute force.” Reliance on such technologies could become the norm as calls for police reform—in particular, the defunding of the police—take root around the country.
To see the effects of surveillance technology on societies, look to the experiences of both authoritarian regimes such as China and North Korea and democracies such as Mexico and Israel. Link

Russia Declassifies Video From 1961 of Largest Hydrogen Bomb Ever Detonated
The blast was over 3,000 times bigger than the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima
Hydrogen bombs are so destructive, their impact has been described as unthinkable throughout history. Recently declassified Russian footage of the 1961 Tsar Bomba hydrogen bomb test shows why.
The 40-minute documentary, which was posted on YouTube on August 20, shows footage of the largest bomb ever detonated on Earth, Thomas Nilsen reports for the Barents Observer. Video footage shows the blast from several angles, sometimes struggling to show the entire mushroom cloud in the frame. Later, the documentary compares the ice-covered archipelago before the blast to the scorched, red and brown landscape left behind afterward. Link

Archaeologists Discover Single-Edged Sword, Spears & Relics from Ancient Cemetery
Archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Kraków have made several discoveries of spearheads, clasps for fastening clothes, a richly ornamented spindle, iron needles, and a single-edged sword whilst conducting excavations of a graveyard site in Bejsce, Poland.
Researchers believe the site may be associated with the Przeworsk culture, an Iron Age society that dates from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD from central and southern Poland.
The culture’s decline in the late 5th century coincides with the invasion of the Huns. Other factors may have included the social crisis that occurred as a result of the collapse of the Roman world and the trade contacts it maintained with peoples beyond its borders.
Among other military items found are spearheads, which, according to contemporary accounts were the preferred weapons of the tribes inhabiting the areas on the Vistula River during the Iron Age. Link

The “Three Wise Men”: Were they bringing sacred gifts or simply medicine?
Since the early days of Christianity, Biblical scholars and theologians have offered varying interpretations of the meaning and significance of the gold, frankincense, and myrrh that the magi presented to Jesus, according to the Gospel of Matthew (2:11).
Our Three Magi collection in the Biblical Archaeology Society Library reveals different interpretations of the “three wise men,” as they are most commonly known, and why they brought gold, frankincense, and myrrh to Jesus.
- Tradition: These valuable items were standard gifts to honor a king or deity in the ancient world: gold as a precious metal, frankincense as perfume or incense, and myrrh as anointing oil.
- Symbolism: In the well-known Christmas carol “We Three Kings,” the three gifts were chosen for their special spiritual symbolism about Jesus himself—gold representing his kingship, frankincense a symbol of his priestly role, and myrrh a prefiguring of his death and embalming.
- Medicine: Researchers at Cardiff University have demonstrated that frankincense has an active ingredient that can help relieve arthritis by inhibiting the inflammation that breaks down cartilage tissue and causes arthritis pain.
Did the magi “from the east” know of frankincense’s healing properties when they presented it to young Jesus? Are the gifts simply symbolic, or were they based on tradition?

The rushed emergency approval for a treatment that might help COVID-19 patients has raised questions: Is the FDA abandoning its own guidelines? On the eve of the Republican National Convention, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn announced that the FDA had issued emergency use authorization for investigational convalescent plasma as a treatment for COVID-19.
Plasma is the liquid part of blood. Sometimes, for treatment purposes, it is taken from people who have been infected with but recovered from a disease, because it contains antibodies that fought the disease. Doctors then inject this so-called convalescent plasma into patients who currently have a disease in hopes that the antibodies in the plasma can help current patients. Link

As we stare down the Book of Revelation and all the prophets
In whose house do you belong?
Continuing in the Book of Esther in parallel to the Book of Revelation in Chapter 2 verse we find Mordecai. The language is very specific.
He is a man, a son, a tribe, and of course, his location.
God Bless you from the trenches.
