Song of Songs 1:1: The Supernal Lover of my Soul

I am digging into Songs of Songs-Shir HaShirim, yet again. What is it this time of year and season that draws me back to this book?

O, would He kiss me, kisses if his mouth-Your loving is better than wine.... Song of Songs 1:1

The supernal lover of my soul stands watches over His beloved from behind a wall [a veil]. It veil separating them is of a coarse material the physical properties of the human body which isolates the divine beloved from her adored Lover of her soul. The shepherd, the lover of my soul, stands just beyond the doorway. She knows he is close because she catches the scent of his fragrant oils -if only He would draw close to me face-to-face and kiss me lovingly.

Flowing oil and billowing fragrance have brought Him to her senses, but it is not enough, she begs, "O would he kiss me, kisses of the mouth."

There are two ways for the human soul to experience God. The first is through the intellect, by thought and rational inquiry. But experiencing God is not an intellectual process, and intellectual appreciation of all the ways God's wisdom, will and ability manifest is not the experience of God. It can be compared to the appreciation of a gorgeous fragrance its source may be hidden from view, but its existence is confirmed by the olfactory process. God's transcendence and the lawlessness of His dominion permeating oil of Creation can be similarly detected, and those enlightened with the Fear of God, yirat Adonai, can smell Him.

I will worship my God with all of my strength. I will climb to my Father's house in billowing smoke on a cloud of incense bringing His fragrance to my nostrils.

The metaphor suggests a pillar of incense connecting the human soul to the Divine, whereby the poet, following his sense of smell, can feel something about the realness of God.

The second and more exalted way to perceive God can only be compared to a kiss, wherein the couple's desire and yearning for each other move them to connect face to face, panim v' panim.

In the Book of Isaiah, we are told: "I will make him smell the Fear of God." He will be able to smell, truth, lies, guilt, and innocence and be able to judge with perfect Rules of Evidence.

Today let the winds of the Ruach HaKodesh, the Holy Spirit, take you on a whole out of body experience of all your senses and in the Spirit of Prophecy, which is Jesus Christ.

Be blessed today and always as we draw closer to the Wedding Supper of the Lamb and eternity with our Bridegroom.
