Fleeting Windows of Opportunity

Some ideas being presented to agribusiness is recycling or redirecting food waste back into the food chain and marketing it as high-value.  Another idea is making greater use of plant-based protein sources.  These will be engineered to be 'nutritionally beneficial but also meet consumers’ preferences in terms of taste and texture.' Lastly, there will be an increase in the use of novel protein sources including by-products and co-products of distillation processes.  

What is Sustainable Protein?

 Sustainable protein secure means:

• Increasing livestock biodiversity- Does that include synthetic lifeforms?
  
• Agricultural policies & regulation: Continuous advancements in agri-food innovation and the application of new technologies
• Improving plant and animal breeding to enhance yields and protein quality: Africa has an abundance of unexploited agricultural resources which can be developed to increase sustainability in the protein supply chain. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) will become a hub for the agriculture of the future.
  
• Agri-food technologies: Key emerging technology areas include genomics, microbiota, digital and food processing technologies.

The global protein industry is expected to grow but those agribusinesses wanting to profit will have to think outside-the-box.  Read report

One Health Certified

Part of the incremental social distancing of you from your protein source is the new United States One Health Certified™ program for animal proteins! The certification is based on five principles:

1. Disease prevention
2. Veterinary care
3. Responsible antibiotic use
4. Animal welfare
5. Environmental impact

Right now standards are only offered for chicken and turkey, but standards for pork, eggs, beef, and dairy are in the works. It is a significant accomplishment toward the One Health agenda that seeks to eliminate the barriers between humans-animal-environment. As we start to see these kinds of initiatives pop up more, we may see One Health Certified™ foods for other food security and nutrition projects.

COVID19 Makes the Protein Data Bank Molecule of the Month

From Global Biodefense we find that the Protein Data Bank released a new Coronavirus protease structure following the recent coronavirus outbreak, an ongoing viral epidemic now threatening the world.  It was the topic of their Molecule of the Month’ feature, indicating a high-resolution crystal structure. Rapid public release by ShanghaiTech University of the viral structure known within the archive as PDB 6lu7, will enable research on this newly-recognized human pathogen including objectives within fundamental biology, biomedicine, bioenergy, and biotechnology.

The PDB archive is jointly managed by the Worldwide Protein Data Bank partnership, involving super-computer data centers in the United States, Europe and Asia. U.S. operations are located in San Diego and San Francisco. 

It is believed that small molecule drugs might inhibit the cleavage of this protein in coronavirus and prevent the spread of the infection.  But what damage these small molecule drugs do to a body is unknown. 

Scientists are banking on an eco-system of interoperable tools of reproducible and scalable structural Bioinformatics from the global community.

Forensic Proteomics: Going Beyond DNA Profiling

Forensic proteomics can provide evidence in a search centered on a protein-based toxin, drug, or sports doping hormone. It can reveal clues about whether a disease occurred naturally or as the result of a biological attack.

Faith Lesson:  These infiltrators are unstable like planets. The darkness God has reserved for them is like the night sky through which the planets move. They are forever consigned to the dark regions. Rather than offering God’s unchanging truth, a stable guide for his people to follow, they keep changing, adjusting their positions. A Method of Mass Detection

Scientists already detect certain proteins when they are testing for things like anthrax or other bioweapons by knowing what they are looking for in advance. Detecting a single protein is useful, but because there are so many different types of proteins—a few thousand in a single bacterial cell and tens of thousands in human tissue—it would be expensive and time-consuming to make an antibody to detect every protein one by one.

Proteomics is different because it looks at all the proteins in a sample at the same time.  Mass spectrometers analyze the peptides (relaxed proteins), tracking the number and type of peptide signals they detect.

Imagine a future where satellites have the capability to surveillance the proteins in your body to determine if you have been eating non-One Health certified proteins.  They would then have the power to apprehend you and prosecute you in an International Tribunal.
