The new Summit AI supercomputer changes matter and energy;  simultaneously engaging in cancer surveillance; while accelerating a mixture of AI techniques functions and evolution to proteins and cellular systems within biological systems; and peering at your gold jewelry and the iron in your blood which seeded the universe. These are very complex and mysterious objectives indeed!

This is a stunning and explosive alliance between IBM and Oakridge National Laboratory, run by the U.S. Department of Energy. 

Gold Jewelry Seeded the Universe?

Unlocking the mysteries of creation through the study of astrophysics and how heavy elements including gold jewelry and iron in your blood seeded the universe.  Summit will use a scalable FLASH code simulating exploding star scenarios several times longer and tracking more than 12 times more elements.

As if you at your gold jewelry seeding the universe are not strange enough Summit will develop the next generation of materials, including compounds for energy storage, conversion and production of subatomic material behavior.

Transforming Matter and Energy

Summit, QMCPACK applications, can support materials composed of hundreds of atoms, a jump that aids the search for a more practical superconductor—a material that can transmit electricity with no energy loss.

“Summit’s large, on-node memory is very important for increasing the range of complexity in materials and physical phenomena,” said ORNL staff scientist Paul Kent.  This will ability will allow for a transformation of matter and energy on earth turning it into a bizarre Twilight Zone of false reality.

AI Mastered Biological Systems

Using a mixture of AI techniques on Summit, researchers will be able to identify patterns in the function, cooperation and evolution of human proteins and cellular systems.

“The complexity of humans as a biological system is incredible,” said ORNL computational biologist Dan Jacobson. “Summit is enabling a whole new range of science that was simply not possible before it arrived.”

Cancer Surveillance

Summit is a tool that will be automatically extracting, analyzing and sorting existing health data to reveal previously hidden relationships between factors such as genes, biological markers and environment. Paired with unstructured data such as text-based reports and medical images, machine learning algorithms scaled on Summit will supply medical researchers with a comprehensive view of the U.S. cancer population at a level of detail.

This cancer surveillance project is part of the CANcer Distributed Learning Environment, or CANDLE, a joint initiative between DOE and the National Cancer Institute.

Performance and Power

Summit will perform 200,000 trillion calculations per second—or 200 petaflops.  Summit will be eight times more powerful than ORNL’s top-ranked system the Titan. For certain scientific applications, Summit will also be capable of more than three billion billion mixed precision calculations per second, or 3.3 exaops. Summit will provide unprecedented computing power for research in energy, advanced materials and artificial intelligence (AI), among other domains, enabling scientific discoveries that were previously impractical or impossible.

“Today’s launch of the Summit supercomputer demonstrates the strength of American leadership in scientific innovation and technology development. It’s going to have a profound impact in energy research, scientific discovery, economic competitiveness and national security,” said Secretary of Energy Rick Perry. “I am truly excited by the potential of Summit, as it moves the nation one step closer to the goal of delivering an exascale supercomputing system by 2021."

The IBM AC922 system consists of 4,608 compute servers, each containing two 22-core IBM Power9 processors and six NVIDIA Tesla V100 graphics processing unit accelerators, interconnected with dual-rail Mellanox EDR 100Gb/s InfiniBand. Summit also possesses more than 10 petabytes of memory paired with fast, high-bandwidth pathways for efficient data movement. The combination of cutting-edge hardware and robust data subsystems marks an evolution of the hybrid CPU–GPU architecture successfully pioneered by the 27-petaflops Titan in 2012.

ORNL Director Thomas Zacharia says, "The pioneering research of ORNL scientists and engineers has played a pivotal role in our nation’s history and continues to shape our future."

Summit offers unparalleled opportunities for the integration of AI and scientific discovery, enabling researchers to apply techniques like machine learning and deep learning to problems in human health, high-energy physics, materials discovery and other areas. Summit allows DOE and ORNL to respond to the White House Artificial Intelligence for America initiative (released May 10th) which calls for:

One of the projects that Summit will be working on will be with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs using its architecture to understand the genetics of addiction.
